EMILY MAKES LUNCH

I was thinking of things that I am interested in and things that I could also do on this blog/maybe my YouTube channel.  I realized that I really enjoying cooking and baking and was interested in trying to incorporate that into easy recipes for the everyday cook in all of us.  So, I decided to make a series called "EMILY MAKES LUNCH" (which is a play on what my sister always used to tell me).  I will start to post more recipes for lots of fun, yummy things.  I have also dedicated an entire tab in the menu so you can have quick access to all of the recipes.  I am excited to start this new project on this blog!  I hope you are excited to see some yummy recipes.

PINE TREE APPLE ORCHARD



This past weekend I saw on Facebook that the Pine Tree Apple Orchard was finally open for business for the Autumn season.  This made me most excited because I love everything about the apple orchard: the treats, the scent of the autumn season, and, of course, the apples.


These apple turnovers and cinnamon sugar donuts GIVE ME LIFE.  Seriously.  So good.

This is the apple floor, filled with, you guessed it, apples galore.  Granny smith, cortland, red gala, honey crisp (my personal fav), and a whole bunch of other types of apples.  And all grown on the on-site apple farm.


One of my favorite places to go this time of year, and I expect to go back very soon.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS | CERAVE SKIN RENEWING NIGHT CREAM

Recently, I was perusing through the makeup/skin care isles at Target (as you do), and remembered that I needed to pick up a new face night cream.  I had previously been using the Aveeno night cream, and liked it, but was in the mood to try something new.  You know how that is!  Looking through all the products, I saw the CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.

You may or may not know but I have a huge love for CeraVe products, so I knew that I would probably like this product.  I really wanted to try this product and give my first impressions.  So let's go!


This CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream is a creamy, thick consistency which I really like because I feel like it is very hydrating.  Although thick, I don't feel as though it is heavy on the skin (which I really love!)  This night cream is advertised to have MVE Delivery Technology.  Apparently that means that the ingredients are trapped within multi-layered vesicles that are slowly released over time.  Now, that sounds impressive!  This cream also claims to soften and renew the look of tired skin overnight, using Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide, which keeps skin hydrated and helps reduce the appearance of redness, respectively.  Now that all sounds great and science-y, but I am more interested in how this product works.  I am not disappointed!  This product feels buttery smooth on my skin and it honestly feels amazing.  I can almost instantaneously feel my skin drinking up the moisture.  When I wake up the next morning, my skin feels amazing!  It actually looks brighter and less red too, which I was a bit skeptical about.  I am so happy that CerVe products haven't let me down.  I highly recommend this product if you are looking for a nice, hydrating night cream!

TV SHOWS I'VE COMPLETELY WATCHED


I love movies and I love TV shows.  I probably spend way too much time out of my life watching movies/tv shows/youtube videos etc.  However, it takes a special show to keep my attention throughout the entirety of its seasons.  Hey, I get bored, what can I say?!

So here are some TV shows that I have completely watched(either, that have completely ended or up until the latest season):

WHAT A WEIRD WEEK


To put it simply, this week has been weird.  Weird for a lot of different reasons.  Let me start at the beginning.  Monday of this past week.  We were headed to the Mall of America at about 10 am.  Driving the car about 3 minutes away from home, when my dad pulls over saying that the car is not going into the net gear.  Now, I don't know much about how cars work but I know when a car speeds up the engine goes into different gears depending on how hard it has to work (like a bike does).  This is not good and often means that the transmission is broken.  Luckily we were only 3 minutes from home, so my dad put the hazard lights on and slowly drove home.  We ended up taking our other vehicle to the mall, so we got there in case anyone was concerned about that.

We had been talking about getting a "new" car for months, but had never really been actively looking.  The fact that the car transmission went out really put a fire under our butts.  We stopped by the car dealer on the way home from the mall.  We probably spent 3 hours looking at all the different cars, and found one that we wanted to check out.  We picked it up the next day, test drove it over the next couple of days, and ended up buying it.  I actually think I want to do a video/blogpost about advice for buying a car because it is SOOOO much money and you want to be as educated about the process of car buying to make the best decisions.  I feel like I've learned a lot through my own experience that I want to share with you, if you are interested.

Later that night, we finally arrived home only to find out that the air conditioner was not working.  It was only blowing the hot, outside air into the house.  Great.  We called the repair man and they were out to our house that morning.  Luckily, it was only a little broken part that was easy to fix, but he told us that the hot water heater's pipes were extremely corroded and it needed to be fixed ASAP.  Maybe it was a blessing in disguise because the relatively small thing (broken air conditioner part) led to the discovery of a bigger problem (the corroded water pipes).  Luckily, that is all taken care of now and the plumber is coming out here this week.

Then last night we went to the movies and saw Kubo and the Two Strings. As we were leaving the theater and heading back to the van, the van wouldn't start.  NOT ANOTHER VEHICLE PROBLEM.  Honestly, at this point I am so over vehicles and their problems.  Thankfully, we had roadside assistance to the insurance plan because they sent a tow truck to jump start the battery.

Everything is good now, but man, what a weird week.  It seems like everything was going wrong and it cause a lot of unwanted stress, but at the end of the day, it could have been a lot worse.  I choose to be optimistic about this whole situation.

SOME SH*T ABOUT LIFE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Every day we get older and once you graduate high school, you are expected to "know" how to be an adult.  Sometimes it's difficult and you will definitely not know how to do most things.  Today, I thought I would share some useful and underrated advice about some shit you should know about life.
Here we go, kiddos.


  • Generic is just as good as name brand.  You don't have to shell out more $$ just for a name brand.  Except peanut butter.  Buy name brand peanut butter.
  • Do the dishes before there is something growing on it.  Trust me.
  • Buy a first aid kit.  You will definitely use it at least once and is a good thing to keep around.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car (i.e. flashlight, blankets, jumper cables, etc.)  It will be handy if you ever are in need of it.
  • Buy a roll of parchment paper or aluminum foil to put on baking sheets to cook food on.  It makes for very easy clean up and the pan doesn't get sticky.
  • Keep a calendar near your computer or desk of your bill due dates.  It makes managing them all a lot easier.
  • Rice, flour, pasta, sugar, frozen vegetables, and a good selection of spices go a long way food-wise.  It is wise to splurge and get a large container of rice because in the long run, you can store it and it will provide many meals.
  • MAGIC. ERASERS. ARE. A. GODSEND.
  • Do you drink?  If so, don't combine with any medications.  Also, make sure to check doses on any medications because it can be easy to overdose.
  • Keep triple antibiotic ointment in your house for cuts, burns, and other sores that you may get.
  • everyone else is too busy panicking about everyone else's opinions of them to notice anything that you might be self conscious about.
  • Two words: thrift stores.  I have had many amazing finds that have come from thrift stores.
  • Take care of yourself when you are young, because your older self will thank you for it.

BATH AND BODY WORKS | AUTUMN CANDLES

It's beginning to be that time of year again: AUTUMN.  One of my favorite times of year!  And this also means that Bath and Body Works starts rolling out all of their autumn products.  It was also their Get 2 for $24 deal, so double score for me!  I got a bit excited when I saw them in the store, and picked up a few things (mostly candles, let's be honest...)


I got Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin which smells literally like a pumpkin pie.  It has a strong clove scent, so if you're not into that, it might not be the scent for you but it does smell exactly like Autumn.

The next one is Silver Pine & Cedar.  Amazing, smells like you're walking through a magical forest of pine and cedar trees.  It has a nice, fresh scent to it!

The last one is the one I am most excited to use!  It's called Autumn, appropriately enough.  This candle smells amazing!!!  I literally can't express my love for it enough.  It smells of an apple orchard, with fresh, crisp apples.  It is very autumnal and I am so excited to burn this candle!

MAKEUP WISHLIST


A couple months back, I made a blog post about my skin care wish list and I decided to make a similar one but this time for makeup, because who doesn't love makeup?! Especially me!  I decided to pick something from each category that I would like, so here we go!

FACE
Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H Foundation

I would like to try this foundation because I really enjoy Lancome products and I read reviews about this foundation and apparently it has really good coverage and feels good on the skin.  This is really important to me because I HATE when a foundation feels cakey or oily on my skin.  I am also really interested how long this foundation will last, as it claims to be 24H.


EYES
Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette

I had heard so many people rave about this palette.  The eyeshadow color selection looks really nice for everyday or glam night out and apparently it smells of peaches.  Can't get any better than that!

Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Eyebrow Pencil
I have been using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz eyebrow pencil for many months now, and had always been interested in trying something new, so I saw that this product came out and heard people talk about how nice and easy it is to use.  So it is "goof proof" as the name says.  Exactly what I'm looking for!  Doing my eyebrows always stresses me out, and hopefully this product will make it a little less stressful.

LIPS
Colourpop Liquid Matte Lipsticks
I know I am a bit late to the party, but I have recently tried liquid matte lipsticks and fell in love with them (as long as they don't dry out my lips, of course).  I had heard so many amazing things about the Colourpop ones and the colors are just gorgeous!  + they are so inexpensive - I think they are about $6!!

TAMARACK NATURE CENTER

My dad and I decided to go the Tamarack Nature Center for a little hike.  I used to go to here a ton when I was younger (they have a lot of kids programs, especially in the summer), but haven't been there in a couple of years.  It was just as nice and peaceful as I remember.






It's crazy how all of this nature is only a couple of blocks from typical surburbia.  It's nice to know that places like this exist, if I want to get more in touch with nature.  I am learning to appreciate all the things around me.

CHOCOLATE CHIP BANANA BREAD

I was in the baking mood (again!) and had some too-ripe bananas, so what's something I could make?? Banana bread of course!  I decided to add chocolate chips because, well, I'm feeling pretty crazy.

I got this recipe from Food Network, the recipe which you can find here.  (EDIT: I believe I have already done a blog post about banana bread, but I made it today, and though, "Hey, why not share this moment with all my lovely blog friends?" Enjoy.)




INGREDIENTS
1 cup granulated sugar
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 large eggs
3 ripe bananas
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Butter a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
Cream the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
In a small bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Mix in the milk and cinnamon. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Add the banana mixture to the creamed mixture and stir until combined. Add dry ingredients, mixing just until flour disappears.
Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Set aside to cool on a rack for 15 minutes. Remove bread from pan, invert onto rack and cool completely before slicing.


Voila.  Delicious results.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

So I was in the mood to do some baking and decided to make the classic chocolate chip cookie.  You can never go wrong with a chocolate chip cookie.


I ended up following the recipe from Betty Crocker which you can read here, but I will put the recipe on here as well for easy access.
(EDIT: the recipe makes a lot more cookies than shown...I didn't take these pictures until almost all were gone.  My bad!)


INGREDIENTS:
3/4
cup granulated sugar
3/4
cup packed brown sugar
1
cup butter or margarine, softened 
1
teaspoon vanilla
1
egg
2 1/4
cups all-purpose flour
1
teaspoon baking soda
1/2
teaspoon salt
1
cup coarsely chopped nuts (optional.  I did not do this, but it sounds like a good thing to add)
1
package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips (2 cups)

DIRECTIONS:



  • 1 Heat oven to 375ºF.
  • 2 Mix sugars, butter, vanilla and egg in large bowl. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt (dough will be stiff). Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.
  • 3 Spoon dough into rounded tablespoonfuls and place them about 2 inches apart onto cookie sheet.
  • 4 Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown (centers will be soft). Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet. Cool on wire rack.
  • Although warm cookies are, like, the absolutely best, I think I actually preferred these cookies once they were all the way cooled.  But hey, to each there own.

FUN AT THE PARK






On our daily walk, we decided to go a different direction and walk to the nearby elementary school.  Once there we decided to go on the swings.  I opted out for the swings because I don't know what it is but swings/the swinging motion makes me feel ill.  So instead I watched my dad and sister go on the,.  I even pushed my sister in the blue kids seat.  We had come to this park many times when I was younger and it was interesting to go back now that I am older/taller and see how everything has changed.  My perspective has changed.  I guess that's what growing up does to you.

A LOOK AT | L'Oreal Total Repair 5 Damage-Erasing Balm

Because I have naturally curly hair that is dry and has been colored and heat styled many times, I have discovered the amazing benefits of hair masks.  I have done my fair share of research and reading reviews of many different types of hair masks and I came across this one and picked it up from my local Target and decided to give it a try.  The product I am talking about is the L'Oreal Total Repair 5 Damage-Erasing Balm.


This product claims it "repairs up to 1 year of damage in 1 use".  So I decided to put this to the test and try it only once before I reviewed it.

THIS. This mask is officially my holy grail mask.  It is a thicker consistency than most masks which is why I think it is called a balm.
It is very easy to use, just scoop some up, put it through the ends of your hair, and leave for 3-5 minutes.  The "5" in the name represents the 5 signs of dame that this mask is supposed to solve:1. split ends, 2. weak, 3. rough, 4. dull, 5. dehydrated. There are many great things about this mask: it smells great and it makes my hair feel AMAZING!  Even though I have used it only once, this is actually one of the better hair masks that I have tried and I will definitely continue using it.

A LOOK AT | Urban Decay's Naked Skin Foundation

Today I wanted to take a closer look at a product that I have been absolutely LOVING recently:
Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation


Ok first things first:
My skin has a tendency to be dry in the winter and oily in the summer.  I have been working on making my skin more consistent at a healthy moisturized level...it's a work in progress.  Now on to the review!


They have a nice selection of 24 shades ranging from 0.5 Very Cool to 12.0 Warm/Dark.  Even though I tend to always go for the lightest shade, I asked the lady at Sephora and she said that since it was summer, I should go with the 1.0 instead.  I think it is the perfect shade to my summer skin tone!


This foundation is amazing!  Because of past skin issues (i.e. blemishes, dark spots, redness) I had always wanted to go with the most full coverage foundation possible.  But since my skin has cleared up dramatically from change in diet and better skin routine (might do a blog post/video on this sometime!) I haven't felt like a full coverage foundation was necessary anymore.  Thus, I was on the hunt for a new lightweight coverage foundation.  I have tried my fair of BB creams and tinted moisturizers but I felt like sometimes I just wanted to put a good layer of foundation on.  

After I saw the reviews, I decided to give this one a try and I was impressed.  I LOVE how lightweight it is on the skin.  The consistency is almost watery and the coverage is buildable.  I also like that this foundation gives a luminous, flawless finish that covers most of the imperfections on the skin.  I have to say that my favorite part of this foundation is that when I wear it, I literally cannot even tell I am wearing foundation.  WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!! *Happy dance*  This foundation gets a two thumbs up from.  But don't take it from me, give it a try for yourself.
